Sir, – CDC Armstrong seeks to ameliorate Andrew Bonar Law’s obdurate position on Ulster by citing Bonar Law’s rider that it would be supported by “the overwhelming majority of the British people” (Letters, October 31st).
Given that 50 per cent of the UK population (the female half) had no vote at the time and a significant percentage of men were still disenfranchised, one wonders how Bonar Law would have measured his support.
Clearly Conservative boosterism is not an invention of the more recent Johnson years.
