Sir, – The latest suggested wheeze to solve the teacher shortage by eliminating career breaks for new entrants to the profession prompts me to suggest that The Irish Times should devote a special feature to “Labour shortage of the week”.
After all, it is not just teachers that seem to be in short supply just now.
We are short of nurses, doctors, medical consultants, builders of all types, bus drivers, care assistants, special needs assistants, restaurant staff, bar staff, other hospitality industry staff, airport security staff, software engineers, soldiers, naval personnel, priests, probate officers, child carers, chefs and baristas.
The only people that we do not seem to be short of are politicians and talking heads.
Is it better to get paid weekly or monthly?
