Sir, – Theresa Ryder’s article “Some of us need a way out of the seasonal madness” (Opinion & Analysis, December 23rd) bemoans the lack of empathy in Irish society to those who don’t wish to have the restrictions of Christmas imposed on them. I wholeheartedly agree with this seemingly unpopular opinion.
The many whispered conversations I have overheard recently are mostly just wishing this stressful time of the year was over. Is it just too embarrassing to openly admit?
While it is not solely an Irish problem (much of the UK also closes on Christmas Day, as I found out on a lonely London on December 25th), it is a shame there cannot be more appreciation that not all people’s lives revolve around the nativity.
Theresa Ryder puts it perfectly: “You can enjoy the trees, tinsel and turkey but let’s have an open season with something for all.” – Yours, etc,
