Sir, – Mark Paul is right, when he says about the goings on in Britain at present, that: “The correct reaction is one of deep concern” (“Ireland’s economic path suddenly seems much clearer than Britain’s”, Business, Caveat, January 6th).
But it is folly to believe we can help someone or something if they themselves continue to ascertain not only that they are not in need of assistance but are in complete denial as to the root causes of their problems.
The fact that there is very little sympathy across Europe for the British “condition” should be reason enough for some deep introspection inside the ruling classes within the UK but offering “help” to a patient addicted to hyperbole and untruths is likely to make matters only worse. – Is mise,
