Sir, – Shana Cohen, CEO of TASC, is broadly supportive of President Michael D Higgins’s recent speech seeking to widen the debate on progress (“Economists didn’t like it, but we can’t afford not to listen to what Michael D Higgins had to say”, Opinion & Analysis, May 9th). However, most of the argument for a different view of progress is framed in the context of climate change. Looking outside of Ireland, most of the damage we inflict globally relates to worsening inequality. Until we analyse and address our facilitation of global greed with the same vigour we apply to climate change, then we are doing the world, and ourselves, a huge disservice. – Yours, etc,
PAUL CONNOLLY,
Cavan.
