Sir, – I note that Sutton and Howth Dart users are unhappy about the proposal for some to change train at Howth Junction, due to upgrading Dart to Drogheda (“Howth Dart users face widespread disruption over line extension”, News, May 17th).
Please spare a thought for rail travellers on the current Drogheda line. For as long as I can remember, the Dart was promised on this line but nothing materialised. The service from Balbriggan to Dublin currently runs approximately every 10 minutes (early trains only) to 60-plus minutes Monday to Friday. On Sundays, trains are roughly every hour, but with longer gaps in between, depending on the time of day.
On weekdays, at certain times, and indeed on Sundays, the train leaving Dublin is crowded, with many commuters standing for long periods. My heart is in my mouth on a regular basis, hoping that I don’t miss a train in either direction.
Dart is a wonderful service, so I can only hope that we, the commuters on the Drogheda line, will be able to enjoy it as soon as possible. – Yours, etc,
