Sir, – I read with horror that drivers watching sport while driving are “not breaking the law” ( “People ‘watching sports’ and using FaceTime while driving not breaking law, Policing Authority told”, News, June 30th).
What else is coming down the road, I wonder? Drivers happily shaving, waxing, washing hair, applying make-up, doing pilates and even, heaven help us, cooking dinner will become the norm, I suppose. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Your report that Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, in charge of Garda road traffic policing, has told a Policing Authority meeting that “there’s no offence of distracted driving” is a little alarming. I sought reassurance from the driving offences section of citizensinformation.ie and was happily informed that it still remains “an offence to drive in a public place without due care and attention”. So it appears those “people watching sports and using Face Time while driving” are breaking the law.
I would suggest enforcement of our existing traffic laws would not go amiss. – Yours, etc,
