A chara, – The nation looked on in disbelief as members of An Garda Síochána stood guard over ATMs across the country on Tuesday night following the Bank of Ireland technical mishap (“Bank of Ireland warns credit ratings could be affected by withdrawals made during IT outage”, News, August 16th). In a time where lawlessness reigns supreme in Dublin city centre, with assaults and muggings making the headlines in this newspaper and across all forms of media almost daily, it is baffling as to why policing resources would be used, and justified, in this manner. – Is mise,

Sir, – Bank of Ireland, in a statement following a technical glitch which allowed customers to access more money than they held, says the bank “fell far below the expected standard” during the outage. Given that queues rapidly formed to “cash in” on the problem, it could be said that the behaviour of some of the bank’s customers also “fell far below” expected standards. – Yours, etc,
