Sir, – As I view the “mugshot” of former US president Donald J Trump peering out from various forms of media, I pause and wonder what exactly happened to the nation that still proclaims itself as “leader of the free world”.
This same shot is being used as a fund-raising aid in the former president’s election campaign, along with the aggressive accompanying narrative of “Never Surrender”, which portrays a cynical disregard for the US legal system.
My sadness is compounded by Mr Trump’s seemingly unabated popularity and that only a very few of his Republican opponents are condemning his actions.
Honesty and bravery seem to be absent within US Republican political debate, a reflection not only on the candidates, but on the masses who still believe that Mr Trump is their saviour. – Yours, etc,
