Sir, – Mark Hilliard’s article about buskers in Dublin (September 3rd) prompts me to express deepest sympathy for the strollers in Shop Street in Galway who have to endure what passes for “performances” by self-styled buskers.
The introduction of permits, one-hour limits and even an 80 decibel volume limit in Dublin are to be lauded. No such controls apply in Galway and there is certainly no street performance code.
What passes for music is blasted out tunelessly and endlessly as passers-by scurry away and traders watch hopelessly as would-be customers duck for cover.
May I appeal on behalf of the citizens of Galway and our valued tourists for some control over busking in our lovely town! – Yours, etc,
