Sir, – The increased costs of fuel (petrol, diesel or charging electric vehicles) has not seen any decrease in traffic. Gridlock on the M50, M4, M7 and other roads around our capital has spiralled.
The amount of large private cars and SUVs – the majority with only one person on board – is crazy. More public transport is, of course, needed. But this takes time and there will never be enough to satisfy the needs of our increasing workforce facing long daily commutes.
A Government induced car-pooling scheme with tax relief for drivers (verified by employers) carrying one or more passengers to or from work should be implemented.
Electric cars might help to reduce carbon emissions but even if every driver in the country could afford the cost of changing to electric, it would do nothing to alleviate the traffic congestion. – Yours, etc,
