Sir, – Mary Conway’s letter (December 18th) correctly outlines many of the issues driving small landlords from the rental market. Once again, however, the “elephant in the room” is not mentioned.
In their most recent 2023 policy document, Sinn Féin has vowed to amend the Residential Tenancies Act, removing the sale of the property as a ground for issuing notice of termination.
They also propose severe limitations on termination where the owner requires the property for family use.
The bush telegraph suggests that many small landlords leaving the rental market are simply protecting their investments and flexibilities ahead of a looming unpredictable election. – Yours, etc,
