Sir, – Paul Clements (An Irishman’s Diary, January 2nd) may rhapsodise all he likes about OSI (Ordnance Survey Ireland) Discovery maps but the reality is that they are not liked by all mountain walkers. Their scale at 1:50,000 and lack of detail renders them not very useful for navigation purposes.
Most walkers I know use the 1:25,000 maps produced by EastWest Mapping, a private company, where they are available. Unfortunately they do not cover the whole country.
The UK OS provides 1:25,000 maps for the whole of Britain. If the OSI were interested in walkers they would do the same for Ireland. – Yours, etc,
TOM FULLER,
