Sir, – I take issue with Geoff Scargill and his criticism of the selection of letters relating to the change of leadership in Fine Gael, referring to The Irish Times as looking more like the Beano than the “paper of register” (Letters, March 27th). The Beano, a fine publication, was my weekly treat as a teenager growing up in Ballyfermot, with characters such as Billy Whizz, Roger the Dodger, Gnasher, Dennis the Menace and my favourite, Lord Snooty.
They all contributed to my interest in reading, and developing an opinion, awareness and political views.
In fact, it is likely that if the Beano had not held my attention, it is possible I might not have developed my interest in reading, especially The Irish Times. Like The Irish Times, the Beano has been around for a long time. – Yours, etc,
