Tax policy is doing massive damage on the income of other countries, especially the poorest

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – Your editorial highlights some of the challenges facing the incoming Minister of Finance (“The Irish Times view on the appointment of a new finance minister: Chambers must learn to say ‘No’”, June 27th). Another one is our ongoing role as one of the world’s largest tax havens. Although this has huge benefits for Ireland it inflicts massive damage on the income of other countries, especially the poorest. Though global poverty indices are improving, they pale when compared to the astonishing levels of wealth going to a tiny percentage of the population. Much of this is funnelled through Ireland. Actions that begin to unwind us from this tax haven role would be a good start to the Minister’s tenure. – Yours, etc,

PAUL CONNOLLY,

Cavan.
