Sir, – Further to “The Irish Times view on wind energy: benefits must flow to consumers” (November 20th), the cost of electricity in Ireland was 176 per cent above the EU average for the first six months of this year, and from 2009 to 2023 Ireland’s electricity prices were 152 per cent of the EU average, according to Eurostat data. Why is hydroelectric not being used to provide more than 1.2 per cent green energy? It provides 90 per cent efficiency and is the cheapest green energy, instantaneous and continuous.
The Electricity Association of Ireland says that “Cost reduction will be to the detriment of meeting our needs in the future”. Who in the energy sector represents the consumers? – Yours, etc,
