Sir, – In the review of “value for money: fuel”(Pricewatch, January 14th), it was stated that kiln-dried logs “burn a whole lot better” than the naturally air-dried alternative. This is incorrect. The moisture content of the log is what determines its value as a fuel. Once properly seasoned, air-dried logs burn equally well, are fully carbon neutral, have a higher calorific value and are a more environmentally-friendly product. The review also inferred that air dried fuel can be “sodden”. This is again misleading.

Some unscrupulous suppliers will try to pass off freshly cut timber as being properly seasoned, so having a moisture meter to hand is advisable and customers can then confirm the quality of what they buy. . – Yours, etc,
