Madam, – Geoff Chadwick (December 13th) argues that “the most compelling case for water metering is illustrated by the profligate waste of water by some consumers who leave taps running during cold weather”. Perhaps Mr Chadwick could give us some facts and figures about how many people do this and how much water is wasted? I work in a business that pays water charges, and only 6 per cent of our bill relates to the amount of water we use, the other 94 per cent is a “fixed supply charge” of €300 per year. If we used no water at all in the year, our bill would hardly change.
The idea that the water charge is some sort of conservation measure is a joke, and a lousy one at that. – Yours, etc,
