Sir, - I was very interested to read Dick Grogan's article (From the South-East, April 1st) on the forthcoming exhibition "A Century of Watercolours" which will be held in Waterford later this month. As the article stated, the artists whose work will be represented were responsible for the founding of the Water Colour Society of Ireland 128 years ago, which makes it one of Ireland's longest-established societies.
I am pleased to say that the society is still very active and continues to flourish and to develop interest in this beautiful medium. Today we have 114 active members throughout Ireland. Elections to the society are held every spring and are based on a portfolio of applicants' work by the election committee.
We have, as Dick Grogan wrote, exhibited annually in Dublin since 1891. This year we are also holding an exhibition of the work of current members in Limerick at Gallery 75 from April 26th to May 9th. For those who appreciate painting in this beautiful medium it will be very interesting to have the opportunity to compare the painting executed over 100 years ago with that of today's artists. - Yours, etc.,
Kay Doyle, President
Water Colour Society of Ireland, Greenfield Road, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin.
