Sir, - Imagine my surprise on reading "The Aras", Jim Duffy's article (June 13th), to find no mention of Francis Johnston, the architect.
Johnston was responsible for the alteration of the original lodge, in 1816, to its present classical form with portico, etc. This alteration was only one of a repertoire of new public buildings of the time, most notable being the GPO. "His was the greatest name, after Gandon, in Irish architects" - (Dublin 1660-1860 by Maurice Craig.) - Yours, etc., Thomas O'Rafferty,
Monkstown, Co Dublin.
