A chara, – How refreshing and rewarding to have been made aware of the life of Elizabeth “Daisy” Burgess (Obituaries, July 17th). Now, there’s someone who got it right. Her style and story are an inspiration in this decade of darkness. The simplicity and frugality of a wandering life. Her sense of freedom, her lack of materialism, her sobriety and austerity, her obvious sense of dignity and self-worth and, her long healthy homeless life evidence how very little we really need to survive. And she, “Daisy”, made it to 107!
Here is a life which goes to show the rest of us who've been virtually robbed of hope and humour that all is not yet lost. We could still develop strength of character to tide us through these tempestuous times. I'm reminded of the words of Miranda (Shakespeare's The Tempest): "How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world that has such people in it!" –
