Sir, – In the Tralee Parish Newsletter recently, the rector and Archdeacon of Limerick, the Rev Robert Warren expressed his annoyance that the Church of Ireland had been overlooked in the programme for this year’s main religious service in connection with the Rose of Tralee Festival. And so he might. The text of his comments was quoted by Anne Lucey (Home News, July 20th).
The song entitled The Rose of Tralee was written by one William Pembroke Mulchinock, who fell in love with a local girl. It is not too daring to assume the religious denomination to which this gentleman belonged.
Without William Mulchinock, the pale moon would have risen about the blue mountain unremarked and the sun would have declined beneath the blue sea unrecorded. There would have been no annual Rose of Tralee Festival attracting roses from all over the world and untold sums of money into the national coffers.
Surely the Church of Ireland is deserving of a look in! – Yours, etc,
