Sir, – Those of us of a certain age will remember the attempts (futile) made by Archbishop McQuaid to have the match between the Republic of Ireland and the godless communists of Yugoslavia called off and, failing that, to dissuade fans from attending at Dalymount Park (also futile).

Imagine my surprise and (and delight!) to see Tipperary’s All-Ireland jerseys emblazoned with the logo of the godless communist Czech automaker, Skoda. John Charles will, no doubt, be revolving rather quickly in his place of repose.

Incidentally, while he failed to dissuade fans from attending, he did intimidate revered commentator Philip Greene from providing the commentary, leading to the memorable headline in the Evening Mail “Reds turn Greene Yellow”. – Yours, etc,
