Madam, – I am a retired chartered accountant well known in the 32 counties of Ireland and as such I do things “by the book”. I read an article on the front page (September 4th) regarding Fás with great interest.

I refer to the statement by the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan playing down the loss of €57 million by Fás that was spent on training which will not be paid to the Exchequer because of issues raised by European audits.

I was very surprised by her statement that “other Fás expenditure was used to replace the withdrawn claim, so that there was no overall loss to the Exchequer”.
