Aftermath of nurses' strike

Sir, - With reference to Dr B

Sir, - With reference to Dr B. McLoughlin's letter, I wish to point out that student nurses have traditionally been selected on merit of personality as well as academic capability.

Achieving 570 points in the Leaving Cert may prove that one is academically gifted, but which is more important when caring for the sick - a blend of professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills, or a shining Leaving Cert? Perhaps the medical profession should consider including an interview in its selection of students; the Leaving Cert is no judge of personality! Mathematics and points, Dr McLoughlin, are not everything. Please recognise your colleagues for the professionals they are. - Yours, etc.,
