Sir, - Damien Byrne (December 9th) wishes to "challenge the politically correct consensus" on the issue of AIDS education. He suggests that because only a small minority of people, mainly homosexual, bisexual and drug users, are threatened, that what I would call "AIDS education" should rather be labelled "scare-mongering".
Over ten years ago I became involved with promoting AIDS education through Bolton Street Students' Union. We used any avenue we could, including this page, to promote AIDS education. When we made the suggestion that the health boards should fund and promote this work, we met with the same negative nonsense as we are hearing now from Mr Byrne.
Well, 311 deaths later, I am proud of the work we did. I believe that without our efforts today's toll would be much greater, and I also believe that without the begrudgery of Mr Byrne and his ilk the toll would be far lower. - Yours, etc.,
