Sir, - The article by Carol Coulter on the risks associated with the use of air bags in cars (August 22nd) is a cause for some concern. In fairness both to Dr. William Smock, who is quoted in the article, and to motorists driving cars fitted with air bags, I believe that a more comprehensive, and hopefully a more reassuring, article should be produced by your motoring correspondent. The article did not indicate why children and drivers of less than average height were most at risk in low-speed accidents. Could this be clarified ? In addition it was stated that warnings about taking precautions with air-bags are now posted in cars in the US. What are these precautions ? - Yours etc. WILLIAM J. QUINN
