Sir, - There is a growing awareness of alcohol misuse among young people and the problems associated with late-night drunkenness on the streets. Could it be that recent legislative changes to extend public-house opening hours provides increased access to alcohol? Are we sending mixed messages to our young people?
Rory Quigley (July 24th) correctly highlights the difficulties likely to face garda∅ implementing the on-the-spot fines proposed in the multi-agency advisory group's report on underage drinking. However, it seems unlikely that those issued with tickets will eat them with their kebabs, as he suggests, seeing that new laws are proposed to regulate opening hours in fast- food outlets to assist crowd control.
