Sir, - There is a problem with under-age drinking and related social disorder. An advisory group has suggested "on the spot fines" to be implemented by the unfortunate garda∅. However, most drunken people, young and old, do not know their own name never mind comply with filling in a legal document on the spot.
Surely we have a duty of care to our young when we see them wandering around the streets in a drunken state. Should we not take them off the streets to a place of safety for fear of asphyxiation on their own vomit or molestation from others or walking under a car? Instead it has been proposed to give them a ticket which they will probably eat with their kebab or hamburger as they try to make their way home with no adequate public transport or taxis. - Yours, etc.,
Rory Quigley, Drogheda, Co Meath.
