Madam, – As a frequent bus user and firm believer in public transportation’s contribution to the common good, I welcomed the recent announcement by Dublin Bus that services will be improved (Home News, April 27th).
When, however, were regular bus users consulted? The problem is not the complexity of routes, but rather the infrequency,irregularity or non-existence of service along certain routes. For example, in my area of the north inner city there is no bus service along Bolton Street and North King Street between Dominick Street and Manor Street. The Navan Road and New Cabra Road in Phibsboro also lack convenient service to O’Connell Street. And when will Dublin Bus link the two Luas lines with frequent feeder buses?
I agree with Fintan O’Toole (Weekend Review, April 24th) when he points out that Ireland subsidises public transport far less than comparable European cities do. Proper accounting procedures would include the benefits for health, road maintenance and safety that arise from the use of buses and trains instead of cars, and would thereby reflect the fact that public transport benefits the economy rather than being a drain on it. Furthermore, if better service for the majority results in neglect of the minority who do not live along main arteries, then Dublin Bus will fail the population it is supposed to serve.
Instead of commissioning reports, why not enter into dialogue with those of us who are dependent on the bus and know very well the strengths and weaknesses of the system?
