Sir, - The leaflet accompanying Amnesty's signature campaign for human rights asks us to support those who risk "imprisonment, torture, and death for defending the rights of others", and indeed, we should.

However, last April, I brought Amnesty's attention to the arrest of 11 young people, and the "strip-search" of the female members, for distributing information in defence of the unborn (which was not, and is not, illegal). Since then, I have heard nothing from them. Nothing, apart from the call of their patron, Mrs Mary Robinson, for the denial of the right to life to the most vulnerable in our society.

It would seem that Amnesty and the "rights" movement have an exclusion zone around abortion and those who defend the unborn.

Can this be because it is easier to castigate human rights abuses in faraway places rather than here in our own back yard - or worse, because they themselves condone the perpetration of these abuses? - Yours, etc., Cllr Richard Greene,
