Sir, - I must commend Frank McDonald in his article on the proposed "Millennium Barrage", which I feel would bring a new look to the Dublin quays. I have just returned from two days in Amsterdam and was impressed with the canal system there.
Houseboats and barges ply the waters, or are tied up along the water's edge, adding colour and interest to the waterways. There is no smell, even though the water is murky, unlike the Liffey. We all know what happened to the "time on the slime" and why it had to be removed.
Perhaps the Lottery could sponsor the cost of the proposed barrage in the same way. It might also encourage salmon to enter the new waterway, and a salmon run could be designed to count numbers going up or down the river, as on the River Moy at Ballina. - Yours, etc.,
