Sir, - Will they ever stop sniping at the Angelus? How to explain some people's hostility towards, even dread of the picture of Mary and her Child? Mr Justin Keating (The Irish Times, May 4th) asserts that the Angelus is "wildly divisive". Divisive of whom? And that the Child was "an extremely shadowy figure . . . if he existed at all". So be it.
Cardinal Newman wrote of the doubters of his day: "One encouraging sign is that unbelief cannot believe in itself. In the majority of unbelievers there is a deep misgivng that they are wrong, or probably wrong. This shows in their feverish restlessness and obsessive hostility to religion, indicating a deep insecurity." - Yours, etc., K. Cullen, OSA
