Sir, - It will be a pity if the substance of Amnesty International's anti-racism campaign continues to be eclipsed by reactions to its form. Surely, the key issues are, that racism exists in Ireland; that if unchecked - as we have learned from the death of Stephen Lawrence in the UK - the potential consequences are very serious; and that it is possible to do something about it.
In this context, Amnesty's call for political leadership, though provocative, is timely. We need now to name unacceptable attitudes and behaviour and really engage in deciding what we can do about them. - Yours, etc.,
