Sir, - Anyone who is a regular reader of your newspaper must know that there is indeed a need for properly thought out and funded action against the growth of racism in this State.
Such action should include an education and awareness campaign, the reform of existing laws, the passing of new laws where necessary, and the proper independent monitoring of all race- related incidents.
Action of this kind can only be taken by the Government. To date, it has failed to do so. Good intentions in this area are not enough. They must be followed up by action. Good intentions are no consolation to the children who are spat at and abused as they walk to school in the morning because they are black, or to the woman whose windows have been broken so many times she has stopped reporting it to the Garda. - Yours, etc.,
Rosemary Warner, Blackhall Square, North Brunswick Street, Dublin 7.
