Sir, - With all the criticism aimed at potential Presidential nominees in recent weeks, perhaps the people of Ireland would be better represented by an ordinary stalwart Irish citizen, rather than the big players.
An ideal candidate, for example, would be my wife's Auntie Eileen of Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. A solid citizen of good Irish stock. Has a definite standpoint on issues, but is not dogmatic. Able to bridge the gap between North and South (once threatened the Mayor of Derry, who didn't take offence, with her walking stick). Concerned about the environment (a user and proponent of public transport, and regularly seen calming the traffic through Abbeyfeale with the same stick). Would welcome anyone of any creed, race or background in for a cup of tea. Has a sharp eye, and is as quick to praise as she is to criticise. Has wit and intellect, and is respected by all who know her.
Eileen has all the credentials necessary to succeed Mary Robinson. I nominate Eileen McCarthy. - Yours etc.,
PHILIP JORDAN,
Giant's Causeway, Co. Antrim.
