ASTI DISPUTE ON SUPERVISION

Madam, - In response to Mary Rafferty's implication (January 20th) that teachers are responsible for the queue for the Children's Courts, I'd like to remind her that it is the responsibility of parents to educate their kids with respect to law-abiding behaviour and general society-friendly mannerisms. This comment is typical of the modern- day opinion that the Government, or any arm thereof, is responsible for everything that is wrong in Irish society.

It's time for parents to shoulder responsibility in this area. This would also alleviate the "crowd control" activities in schools that inhibit our teachers from doing the job for which they are being paid! - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - As ASTI members prepare once more to do battle with Government, parents, school managers and themselves I am minded to observe that for a profession apparently dedicated to teaching they show remarkably little aptitude for learning. - Yours, etc.,
