Sir, – Terence Crotty (November 3rd), deliberately or not, misreads the main point made by Michael Nugent: nobody knows who wrote the gospels. This is plain fact. It cannot be proven that the gospels (most of which were left out) that ended up as the new testament, are fictional or factual, and within that, how much allegory should be read into it.

It is one thing to insist that it contains truth through meaningfulness, and another to say it contains truth as fact. The Bible cannot be accepted as factual, except through wishful thinking. There is of course no problem with that; except where actions based on the biblical sources have justification through faith alone, rather than evidence. The whole point of Mr Nugent’s series is about evidence. – Yours, etc,
