Sir - Am I alone in bewilderment or are there any fellow motorists who are quietly simmering, yet to come to the boil, at the recent artwork of Fingal County Council roads department? I refer to "traffic-calming" measures being taken on the six kilometres of roadway from the new Balbriggan by-pass to the Swords dual carriageway.

Where heretofore the road had continuous single white lines on about 1.5 kilometres, there is now a continuous double white line the width of a lorry, unbroken save for road exits, from motorway to carriageway. There is now nowhere on the entire stretch of road to legally pass another vehicle. Heavily laden tractors, construction traffic, learner drivers and double-articulated lorries now absolutely dictate the speed at which traffic moves.

What was the point of spending £45 million on the Balbriggan bypass? If time-saving had anything to do with it, then any money thus allocated has been squandered and negated.

As for "traffic-calming"; I do not think it will be long before two oncoming frustrated drivers lose their cool and pass at the same time with dire consequences. I urge the powers that be to rethink. There has to be a better way. - Yours etc., John McGowan
