Sir, - I write in the hope that one of your readers might be able to suggest a course of action that will motivate Fingal County Council to restore two beaches - one on either side of Sutton Dinghy Club, Strand Road, Sutton - to their, much-valued, public amenity status. For generations, these beaches were a recreational haven for locals and day-trippers, but now they are being used as dumps. Large areas of sand are covered by soil and building rubble and a small but vital amenity, and ecosystem, is being destroyed.I have made representations to Fingal County Council, the Department of the Environment, the Green Party and anyone else who should, normally, have an interest in such wanton acts of ecological vandalism. I am sorry to say that, save for an organisation called Coastwatch, the issue hasn't generated much interest. This is puzzling. There was a time, very recently, when our local authorities boasted about our Blue Flag beaches. Presumably the ecology is no longer "flavour of the month".With summer upon us, and another generation growing up, we need to have these beaches back. - Yours, etc., Pat Cody,Sutton,Dublin 13.
