Sir, - Having been a member of the RTE Authority that approved RTE's investment in the Blue Angel production of Beckett's plays, I am puzzled by the reactions selected for your Letters page.

Nobody ever expected that Beckett would be as popular as the normal TV diet of soap operas and quizzes. That RTE went with the proposal was an unusual example of daring on its part. Instead of congratulations it gets brickbats for showing what at times (e.g. Godot and Krapp's Last Tape), has been the pinnacle of dramatic art.

I wonder - as must RTE - if we actually deserve an occasional injection of quality into our public broadcasting service? Even supermarkets are entitled to loss leaders. - Yours, etc.,
