Madam, - Your front-page report (October 22nd) of former taoiseach Bertie Ahern being treated for a broken leg in the "Mater hospital" raises an issue. I happened to be passing the Mater Private Hospital on Lower Eccles Street at the very moment Mr Ahern, in pinstriped suit but with his leg in plaster, was wheelchair-borne from the building to the waiting State car. He looked distinctly self-conscious and I quickly averted my eyes. My question is: why wasn't the so-called common man from Drumcondra looked after in the Mater's A&E department?
Such is the lot of all other taxpaying citizens with urgent medical needs! - Yours, etc,
