Sir, - I was surprised that Prof Crowley's article about traffic problems (The Irish Times, January 6th) failed to mention the bicycle - one of the most viable, cheap and resource-efficient means of commuting into the city centre.
The enormous economic and environment benefits which a greater use of the bicycle in Dublin would bring in terms of reduced consumption of fossil fuels, reduced emissions and improved health and fitness are detailed in the Report of The Lord Mayor's Commission on Cycling (Department of Civil Engineering, TCD, 1995). Of course, the provision of more cycleways and a better infrastructure generally for cyclists would help in promoting the bicycle as an efficient and safe means of urban transport.
As someone who has cycled from Blackrock to the city centre almost daily for the past five years, I can only encourage others to try it. Or is the bicycle going to be left in the 20th century? - Yours, etc.,
