Sir, - Vincent Browne's thoughtful and provocative article on power and the media (July 29th) omitted reference to the biggest media player in Ireland, RTE. The failure by RTE to cover issues such as the growing housing crisis, the apparent contempt for local government and the absence of the vibrant voluntary community and youth sectors from the airwaves are all realities in the cosy cartel that now represents public service broadcasting in Ireland.
Of course Vincent Browne is correct. The concentration of power and wealth in our society does need to be broken. Sadly, until our national broadcasting service starts broadcasting for the nation and not for itself, real debate must continue in the oft criticised print media. - Yours, etc. Cllr Dermot Lacey,
