Sir, - It is heartening, at last, to see someone write in a compassionate vein about Eamon Casey, (Patsy McGarry, The Irish Times, December 8th). The many who were touched by his encouragement and generosity of spirit will do doubt welcome the suggestion that he be allowed home to finish his days with dignity. We have heard calls over the years for compassion and understanding for other errant public figures, so why not for Eamon Casey?
The big question about his homecoming is: would the rat pack leave him in peace? In the many years since the Profumo scandal, we have had regular unearthings of nuggets of dross by the British media, notwithstanding the great good work the man has reportedly done since.
Eamon Casey has long been forgiven by Who really matters, so why should everyone else not forgive and relent? - Yours, etc.,
Terenure, Dublin 6W.
