Madam, - For Sepp Blatter to refer to "modern slavery" in the context of the contractual positions of some of today's top soccer stars, many of whom are on six-figure weekly wages, is an obscenity (Sports, July 11th).
The evils and injustice of human trafficking, child labour and bonded labour, and the people unfortunate enough to be caught in such circumstances, are clearly not even on the radar of the sadly deluded, pampered president of FIFA. This latest ill-judged outburst by Mr Blatter does a great disservice to the many people who work at grass roots to make soccer a great force for equality and the common good. - Yours, etc,
PAUL O'MAHONY, Comhlámh (Irish Association of Development Workers), Upper Camden Street, Dublin 2.
