Sir, - Recently Professor Dervilla Donnelly (Custom House Docks Development Authority) outlined plans for improving the whole Dublin docks area and stated that all improvements would be "environmentally friendly". Well, it would be a great improvement to the environment if Dublin Corporation would remove the recently installed "yuppy" bleeper that tortures the air all night long at the Pearse Street/Lombard Street traffic lights.
May I ask who benefits from these loud, obnoxious bleepers? The blind are not deal, the deaf cannot hear. Who's left? Perhaps there is a minority I haven't thought of, but even if such a group exists, do you torture normal, people in order to help a minority?
For that is what is going on - there are students and working people living in private accommodation at that particular crossing, and they have suffered for the past few months. Despite telephone calls to Dublin Corporation, nothing has been done to put this situation right.
Even if the bleepers were set to operate only when required, that would be a marvellous improvement; but these bleepers yelp all night long, regardless of whether or not a person has pressed the button. They can also be heard on the top level, three stories high, in the nearby flats. Noise causes stress; it is not environmentally friendly to do the dirty on the local population. Will somebody please cut out the noise at nighttime, at least? PLEASE! - Yours, etc.,
Pearse House,
Dublin 2.
