Madam, - The report in your edition of July 26th on the three CIÉ workers who died in the car-bombings in 1972 evoked feelings of both anger and disgust in me. Anger at the manner in which these murders were air-brushed out of existence for over 30 years by successive governments, afraid perhaps of what might come to light if an investigation of substance took place. Disgust at the report by a Dublin City Council spokeswoman that funding for a memorial to commemorate the atrocity has not been approved.
In 1999 the then Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ms Mary Frehill, at the height of the Drumcree crisis, invited the Orange Order to a reception in the Mansion House following the unveiling of a memorial plaque in Dawson Street commemorating the founding of the Orange Order. Apparently the funding of this memorial posed no problem for Dublin City Council. -Yours etc.,
TOM COOPER
