Sir, - I would like to add my voice to the growing level of protest against the discontinuance of the use of milk bottles by Premier/ Waterford/Glanbia.
The milkman and milk bottles have been part of the social fabric of Dublin life for generations. There was a ritual, especially among older people, of washing the bottles and leaving them out at night. Everybody could take the top off easily. This cannot be said about the dreaded Tetrapaks where strong men have been known to kick the dog in frustration at not being able to open these monsters without spillage and mess. Elderly people haven't a chance.
As we throw these cartons in the bin, we have the consolation of knowing that part of the price we have paid for our carton of milk has gone to the company in Sweden that first came up with the idea. Is this the future? - Yours, etc., Paul Woods,
Healthfield Road, Terenure, Dublin 6.
