Sir, - In response to Mr Brian Murphy of Killiney (May 26th) regarding the litter problem he encountered on Bray seafront, we regret that he and his guests has such an unpleasant experience on their recent visit. We, too, abhor the flagrant disregard shown by some members of the public for the appearance of our unique seafront area. However, I would like to make the following points.

(1) A comprehensive refuse collection system operates seven days a week. However, Mr Murphy will appreciate that it is not possible to operate litter collection on a 24hour basis.

(2) The largest volume of litter on the seafront on Sundays is due principally to the huge number of visitors attracted to Bray each weekend from the greater Dublin area. We would appeal to all our visitors to either use the litterbins provided or to take their litter home leaving behind them only their footprints in the sand.

(3) Bray is on the Government priority list for the introduction of CCTV, which will, as Mr Murphy observed, assist us in maintaining a cleaner environment for all to enjoy.

Finally, Mr Murphy may be glad to know that one of our members has just returned from Singapore and agrees that a litter free environment is a very achievable and desirable objective. - Yours, etc., Dermot De Barra,
